Semis market in 2009
Regardless of a current global steel market situation the topic of the steel semis trade have become still more interesting during the last year.
As the finished long products export from the CIS is decreasing Russian & Ukrainian steel mills at the beginning of 2009 keep exporting billets successfully, though the situation with slab export is opposite.

Billet demand boost at the beginning of the year was caused by a number of factors. Devaluation of national currencies in the CIS has resulted in the production cost and consequent semi-product export price decrease. At the same time relatively high prices for the imported steel scrap have induced Turkish EAF mills to switch to the import of billets from the CIS. Also, Middle east re-rollers and some mills in Southeast Asia have also started to increase the import of billets to force out the imported re-bars from their markets.

Though all these factors are unlikely to remain till the end of the year one thing we can be certain about – the world steel semis market will be far from stable and many surprises are to be expected in 2009.

Current state and outlook of the global steel semis trade (billets and slabs are discussed separately), volume & price dynamics, traditional and new markets in the segment – these are the topics to be discussed at the conference.
